Challenges for a SOLO woman during Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

This has been one of the most requested blogs on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, where I have been particularly asked what are the challenges a woman can face during Mount Kailash Yatra, incase she is traveling alone. Let me share a little background of my Kailash Mansarovar Yatra journey. I have been the only woman in my group of five people but though I was blessed with the company of amazing souls, let me tell you that I did feel awkward on a couple of occasions, where I wished for a female companion during Mount Kailash Yatra

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a surreal experience but you need to take care of few things on your journey of Mount Kailash

Therefore, I am sharing a couple of challenges which I feel a woman should know, while planning for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Let me reiterate the fact that I am writing this blog specifically for a woman. Though, I have already written a couple of more blogs, where I shared an in-depth information on possible things that might hit you up during Mount Kailash Yatra.

I would also like to clarify that whatever I shall be sharing depends on an individual approach. For example, I do regular treks. Therefore, I was seriously fine with a lot of things as I am accustomed to it. But this doesn’t mean that others can get comfortable with it. Incase, you don’t travel or trek often, the chances are there will be instances where you might feel a little discomfort. Keep in mind that Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a pilgrimage site, which is tucked into one of the remotest areas of China. Therefore, the facilities are going to be really basic. Please don’t go with high expectation despite it being an expensive tour

Open Toilets: The moment you are going to enter the China region, there might be a time that you would need to pee in the open. This is because either the route wouldn’t have a toilet or they ain’t clean enough that you can use them. Let me share my personal experience with you. While, we were going to Saga, I told my driver that I need to use the washroom and to my utter amazement he just stopped in the middle of nowhere. For a moment, I actually kept wondering what should I do? As I mentioned above, Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is into one of the remotest areas of China and it will be good that you get ready to face such things. Therefore, please keep in mind to pack either a long skirt, Sarong or a stole to tackle such situations

Personal Hygiene: Personally, I am really a hygiene conscious person. Therefore, taking care of my cleanliness is important and I would suggest you to take care of it as well, especially during Mount Kailash Yatra. There is constant struggle with clean washrooms on this route and there will be moments where you wouldn’t be taking a bath due to high altitude and cold weather. Please do carry toilet sanitizer and paper roll along with wet wipes and panty lines. Because, your hygiene is your responsibility

Shared accommodation: Personally, I was fine with sharing the rooms with other people as I am aware that this happens in almost every trek and Mount Kailash Yatra is no exception. But those who don’t travel often and considering that people who travel for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra are mainly the devotees of Lord Shiva, keep in mind that there are going to be dormitory set up at some places especially if you are doing Kailash Parikrama. You would need to share the room with five or more people though there will be an individual bed that will be provided. Why I am mentioning it is because I met women who weren’t comfortable with this set up and they found it strange. Please come prepared

Travel Kit for Personal Stuff: There are a lot of security checks on the road trip from Nepal to China. There are also checking during the immigration process by the Chinese authorities, where you would need to take out stuff from your bag. Sometimes, it get really embarrassing when few things are left open in front of everyone. I personally have faced such situation therefore I shall insist on organizing a proper travel kit to keep your personal stuff like garments etc. separate

These are some of the tips that I think is important for a woman to know before leaving for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. But, I should also mention that despite facing all such tricky situation I am really glad that I could do Mount Kailash Yatra and complete it successfully at a young age. I really hope that everyone gets to travel here
